Looking Forward to a New Year

Looking Forward to a New Year

Hello friends! It’s been way too long since I dropped by here and I wanted to catch up with you all. I hope everyone had a great holiday and New Year and is well rested and re-energized for 2013.

The holiday season was amazing for White Nest. We started it with the DIY Trunk Show in mid-November (a small local show in Chicago) where we got to meet lots of lovely new people. We continued with the Chicago Renegade Holiday Market two weeks later. The Renegade show (both summer and holiday) are by far my favorite shows of the year. The energy is amazing, the people are incredible and I’m so lucky to be around such amazing artists (I still pinch myself that I’m included in the bunch). After the Renegade holiday show, it was filled with online orders that I scrambled to fill, all the while Christmas shopping and decorating (oh, and doing that stay-at-home-mom-thing :) Once Christmas hit, I was ready for a break. :)

Now that the new year is here, it has me thinking and brainstorming about where White Nest is and where I want it to go. The year 2012 was amazing for me both personally and professionally. Of course, my little guy Oliver arrived in January (whaaaa, he’s almost a year already??). I was able to take 6 months to fully enjoy him before I started back with White Nest. I couldn’t have been happier to come back to it and I was full of energy and creativity. The last 6 months of 2012 were my busiest yet and I was so grateful (not to mention slightly exhausted because running a business with a baby…well, you know.)

There have been some background things going on here the last few weeks that I won’t get into yet, but the future is a little uncertain. I’m looking anywhere I can for guidance and a sign on the direction for White Nest, me and what’s best for my family. I’ll let you know where that ultimately lands, but for now, the future is full of uncertainty and uncertainty and I don’t always get along. But I’m a strong believer that whatever is meant to be, is meant to be.

I hope the new year has you excited and re-energized! If so, can you pass some of that this way? :)

Happy Thanksgiving + Black Friday Sale

Happy Thanksgiving + Black Friday Sale

Wow, a lot has changed in a year. And I have a lot to be thankful for.

Last Thanksgiving, I was seven-and-a-half months pregnant with this little guy (although I was trying my hardest to not be in full waddle mode…:) and I basically skipped Thanksgiving. I had booked two holiday shows on one weekend and was completely panicked about the inventory I had to make. So, I skipped Thanksgiving. My husband drove out to his parents and I stayed home. It was sad but necessary.

Fast forward a year later and we have an almost 10-month-old bundle of crawling/standing energy. He is our complete joy. A lot has changed but we couldn’t be happier. And you better believe that I will NOT be skipping Thanksgiving this year. (Where’s the green bean cassarole? Mmmm….)

And what has become a part of the Thanksgiving tradition? Yep, Black Friday. We’ll be celebrating by staying in our cozy home with our pajamas and having a HUGE sale! (Because let’s be honest…we break out into hives thinking about those big box parking lots.) Think 50% off in our Etsy shop. Yep, it’s going to be kinda huge…here’s a sneak preview just to get you excited…

Enjoy your Black Fridays, whether you chose to brave the crowds or stay home and sleep (we’ll be doing to latter…big crowds scare me. :)

And from our family to yours, have a Happy Thanksgiving!

UPDATE: This giveaway is now closed! Thanks to all that participated and come back again because we’ll be doing more!

Now, for the exciting news…the winner is: Shelley T. who said her favorite White Nest product is “the wall art. I think my favorite is the feathers. I got it at Renegade Chicago!” Thank you Shelley! Give me a shout out at megstevens at whitenestshop.com with your information and I will get it out to you soon!

Thanks again everyone!

Confession time: I’ve only participated in one giveaway. Ever. ONE. I know, as a small biz owner, I really should be thanking my lovely followers and customers more often. So I was thinking the other day that my coveted Golden Yellow Geometric pillow is one of my favorites (and by the looks of my Etsy shop, one of your favorites too). And I want to share the love because he really belongs in a lot of homes because he’s soft and squishy (is it weird that I think a pillow as a “he”? Uh, yes.). So because I love you guys (reaching through the monitor to give you a big hug), I wanted to give this little guy a new home to one of you lucky people!

The Nitty Gritty Deets

Prize: One Golden Yellow Geometric Pillow

Rules: You must be at least 18 years old and have a U.S. shipping address {no P.O. boxes please} to enter. One entry per email address.

To Enter: ‘Like’ White Nest on facebook, then come back here and leave a comment on this post and tell me your favorite White Nest product (any specific pillow? wall art? jewelry?).

Bonus Entry: Share White Nest on your facebook wall. That’s it. That’s like 2 free entries with just a few clicks (so easy, right?).

Deadline: Enter before noon on Friday, November 16th. One random winner will be announced that same day.

Yay! Have fun with this guys and good luck!

Just Catching Up…

Just Catching Up...

It’s been a while since I’ve checked in with what I’ve been up to lately. Aside from the daily grind, we managed to squeeze in some Fall goodness in the past few weeks so I thought I would photo bomb you with baby goodness!! (Since really, this is just a post to show you how big Oliver has gotten :)

My mom made this amazingly awesome sweater for him so we did a little photo “shoot” in the park. He was super mesmerized by the leaves…oh, what things will amuse him.

So focused…

And now, so tired…

We discovered this little Apple Orchard and it was so adorbs…seriously out of a movie. They had fresh doughnuts, corn mazes, tractor rides, apple pies, hot apple cider…need I go on? It was so freaking adorable (did I mention that??)!!

Tractor ride! (And no, this is not my husband’s Halloween costume…two-headed monster? Next year?)

I will take this one…….and this one!

Halloween…what do you do with a baby except for dress him and take pictures?? Well, don’t you worry, that’s exactly what I did! He had two costumes…a lion and dragon (but let’s be honest, the lion costume was way too small but I still managed to squeeze him into it…:). Both costumes were adorbs despite his reservations…

Seriously, what IS this thing?

Ahhhh, much better!

He loved this costume because it still let him do his daily chores, such as digging for toys. Must. get. toys.

Hope you were able to squeeze in some Fall goodness! All the leaves have fallen and the cold weather is officially here…hello, Winter! (sigh…)

Finally!! “I Heart My City” Now Available!

First off, does anyone feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day?? I mean seriously, I wish I had twelve arms, three brains and 30 hours in a day…then maybe I could get somewhere…who’s with me? :)

Okay, enough ranting…I have been neglecting you. Please forgive me and know that I think about you all the time. Yes, you. Life has been more than a little hectic, throw in a cold (for me and the baby) and drain my energy and you have a glimpse into my life the past few weeks! But I’m back and even though it’s so so long overdue, “I Heart My City” pieces are finally in the shop! (Can we please do a dance shuffle?? You don’t know what that is? Okay, me neither but it sounds appropriate.)

I won’t get into the nitty gritty details since it’s all spelled out, but you can now pick your favorite fabric, favorite color thread and your favorite city for your own “I Heart My City” art! C’mon, show a little pride where you live…or celebrate your favorite city…or get a few and make a collage of the places you’ve lived…or want to live…or…or…yep, lots of possibilities.

For all you Chicago locals, I have a listing just for you! In-stock pieces are available and ready to ship…go on, go crazy!

A little bit of advice…if you’re thinking about ordering for Christmas, please please order early! I have two holiday shows and a little man that is taking up some of my time so please order early. (Depending on demand, I may need to limit the amount I can make so again, don’t hold off…!!)

Questions? Contact me! Muah, Meg

A Quick Hello!

A Quick Hello!

It seems that Fridays are the only day I can pop in and say hello to you all! This week was busy, busy, busy. Along with running the shop and working on orders, I’m participating in this year’s Renegade Craft Fair in Chicago for the third year in a row! I can’t wait…well, I can because I have so much inventory to prepare. This happens every year where I have a panic attack and then go into hiding for weeks leading up to the fair. So if I fall off the grid, just know that my fingers are working double time working on inventory.

I just jumped into my “studio” (which I fondly call a corner of our kitchen :) and took some quick snapshots to show the state of my studio and what I’ve been working on…

Lots and lots (and lots!) of cutting fabric…

Recently finished these guys…a few Ruffle and a few Geometric pillows

A sneak peek at the complete rainbow of “Chicago Love” wall art pieces. All these guys will be at the Renegade Fair…

They make me happy. :)

What are you guys up to this weekend? My weekend will be filled with birthday parties, baby proofing (looooong overdue!) and work, work and more work. Hope you guys get some relaxing in for me. :)

Happy Friday!

Behind the Scenes…

Behind the Scenes...

Hi guys! A few people have asked me how I’m working on White Nest, developing new product, doing custom orders, etc. with a baby. Yep, a bouncing, healthy, funny, amazing and oh-can-be-so-difficult six-month-old baby.

So I had to share this classic “working mom, everything went wrong situation…”.

Picture this: Me running around the house, trying to get the camera set up with the tripod, changing clothes and getting the lighting just so so I could take some photos of the jewelry line. All the while, Oliver is sitting/rolling on the floor, whining/crying and I don’t have a clue why (perhaps because I wasn’t entertaining him…:). So I’m singing to him, talking to him, making goofy noises to make him happy, all the while running around the living room…

So I decide (more like HE decides) that these noises were not going to work for him, so I pick him up. Picking up = happy baby. But I knew that I wanted to get these photos done when the daylight was good. So I’m testing out the camera and you guessed it, a giant amount of spit-up (a nice word for vomit) comes shooting out at me and all over my fresh clothes. I groan, quickly change and we’re back at it.

I try putting him down…no good. So I resolve to the fact that I’m going to have to hold him and take these photos. I set the self-timer, run in front of the camera and this is what I get:

A photo with two chubby bebe feet. I just start laughing and realize this is absolutely adorbs.

I hike him up higher and off to photo-taking we go! I took a moment (after I calmed down from my frantic running around) and realize that this working mom stuff is hard.

But I wouldn’t change it for the world. :)

Happy Friday!

By the way, it’s the last day for jewelry SALE! I’m not sayin’, but just sayin’…

Introducing…the latest collection!

Introducing...the latest collection!

Geometric Facet Collection

It’s here and finally finished !! (insert lots of happy dancing over here…) I’m so so so happy to introduce my latest labor of love: the Geometric Facet Collection! (Can you feel my excitement through your computer monitor??) Last year, I included a version of this collection at the holiday shows and had a great response. After a few tweaks and developing a cocktail ring, I am so proud to introduce this collection to you.

I should explain a little why I decided to develop a jewelry line…when I was younger, I daydreamed of owning a boutique store one day (who doesn’t have that thought?). But I recognized a few years ago that what I really wanted behind that dream was to be the person making all the products in the store (which obviously is not humanly possible…well, I guess it is but super crazy). So when I started White Nest, I knew that I wanted to make and develop all types of products…make whatever I was inspired to make…sort of making my own virtual boutique. I love jewelry (again, who doesn’t?) so it only seemed natural for me to branch out and create a fun collection to compliment my love of home accessories and art.

All the pieces from the collection are hand-cut from clay and attached to yummy gold findings. My love for gold jewelry continues to grow and definitely knew that I wanted to use it when I was working on the collection (which is high-larious because I told my husband years ago that I would never wear gold jewelry…funny how things change). It’s just a simple yet fun collection that I think is great for everyday wear.

And because I’m so excited to get it online, I’m having a 20% off sale of the entire collection. Entire collection. Yep, the whole thing. How fun would to mix and match some of the pieces? You can find them here and here.

Anyway, I hope you love it as much as I do…here are a few detail photos. Have you completed something recently that makes you feel complete joy and puts a smile on your face? :)
