Our House (Part 2) + Holiday Show

Our House (Part 2) + Holiday Show

Happy Friday!! This has been crazy week so I’m beyond happy that it’s Friday. Just a quick note that our first holiday show is this weekend. The Show of Hands will be at the Ravenswood Event Center both Saturday and Sunday and even though it’s the first year, there will be some amazing artists!! (Just between you and me, it’s like a mini-Renegade Fair without the crazy crowds…so if you’re looking for a smaller fair with handmade goodness, you should come out!)

Anyway, back to the house tour. I’ll just pick up where we left on Tuesday and let the photos do all the talking…

Guest Bedroom

Hallway (with the COVETED linen closet)

Oliver’s Bedroom

Master Bedroom

Office/Sewing/Crafting Room

There are SO many things we have planned and doing a commentary of each room would result in an epic (not to mention, overwhelmingly) long post. So some major points are…

  • Every room needs to be painted, along with ALL the molding, doors, trim, etc. This sounds pretty easy, right? But nope, former owners painted it white at some point but didn’t use a primer, so it’s chipping. Lots of sanding is in our future…
  • The kitchen backsplash. It gives me a headache. ‘Nuff said.
  • We have a LAUNDRY room! And it’s on the main floor! (It is not a closet and it is not in the basement…this is a huge deal for us former city dwellers…I can’t tell you happy this “minor but necessary” room makes me.)
  • We have a LINEN closet…a whole closet devoted to linens! (Again, us city dwellers have never had a linen closet…this is huge, folks.)
  • The bathroom is vintage and in pretty good condition, considering it’s age but it’s not “cool” vintage. We’re planning on renovating it but much much later down the line.
  • The basement gives me goosebumps. As in goosebumps of love…there is so much potential. Eventually it’s going to be a media/playroom combo. But there is a lot of work to be done before that happens…remove ceiling, install recessed lighting, drywall, paint/add wall treatment to the walls, replace base moulding, add built-ins, etc. etc. etc. (See lots to do…)
  • My office…not the most inspiring space but who cares?? It’s a room….with a door!! I no longer have to spread out over the dining table in a rush to finish orders and then have to clean it up every night. So huge!
  • Not shown: We have a yard! It’s small and again, we have big plans but the dog and small child have thanked us countless times by showing us their happy faces when they’re outside.

I could go on and on…I think you understand that we have big plans! Now, if I could only get 5 more hours in a day, I might be able to actually work on some of them. :)

Hope to see your pretty faces this weekend!

Our House (Part 1)

Our House (Part 1)

Thank you for being a friend……
Travel the road and back again……
Your heart is true, you’re a pal and confidant.

This song goes through my head every time I drive up to our new house…I love the Golden Girls (we even dressed up for Halloween one year) and it’s my only reference to a 50′s style ranch house. Minus the leafy palm trees, that is…so I like to believe that Rose and Sophia are going to come out of the kitchen with their large, shoulder-padded sweaters and give me few one liners every time I walk in…

But let me back up a bit and give you some history on our house journey and how we ended up here.

I’ve lived in Chicago for 10 years and my husband has lived here even longer. And in those ten years, I have moved 7 times. I guess you could say that I always wanted something bigger and better…more space, closer to work (when I was working full-time), allowed dogs, better neighborhood, etc. But being an interior designer, I really wanted my own space. Something that I could finally put my fingerprint on.

But let’s get back to reality…it’s Chicago. It’s an amazing place to live, but it comes with its cost. And we (obviously) never knew where we wanted to end up living. Fast forward a bit and when our little guy arrives, I immediately change my tune. I go from wishy-washy to wanting a safe, protected, family-friendly place to raise our family. And I always knew that we would find that out in the Chicago suburbs. So we decided this was the year to bite the bullet and move our family away from our friends and find that place (scary).

After narrowing down the area, we looked at house and after house. I’m not going to lie…it was difficult and stressful. The real estate activity had picked up considerably and houses were selling in a day. Plus, I was really hoping our money would stretch a little further, but every house we looked at needed major renovation (and let me tell you, I am a huge fan of buying renovating but it just isn’t in the cards for our young family).

When our house came on the market, I got really excited. It had so much going for it and it was in my favorite neighborhood. We looked at it the day after it came on the market and had an accepted offer 48 hours later. It was crazy and fast and a blur. I wish I could tell you that my heart fluttered the first time we looked at it, but it didn’t. But it has SO much potential without major renovations…as one friend put it, “I get to do the fun stuff.” And there is a LOT of “stuff” to do…oy. But I couldn’t be happier to work on making it our own.

I’ll stop yammering and let the photos speak for themselves. And because there are so many photos, I’m splitting it into two posts (whaaaat?? two posts in one week? I know, folks. I know.). But be forewarned, I took these photos the day after our closing. So we will just say that this is one big BEFORE tour, m’kay?

Living Room

Laundry Room

I like to share the good, the bad and the ugly. And there are definitely some questionable items here but it makes me that more excited to get to work on it! I’ll be back later this week with the rest of the house!! Muah, Meg

It’s Been Too Long…

It's Been Too Long...

Phew, helloooo!!!

Did you know that our planet is in fact flat? Promise. I know this because I fell off the face of it……..Buh dum bum. {Opening up with a cheesy joke was the only way I could start this post and deflect my feelings of guilt for abandoning this blog.}

Seriously, it’s November…looking back, my last post was in AUGUST. I swear I fell of the planet but I’ve dusted myself and now I’m back.

To say that the last few months have been a whirlwind would be the understatement of the century. My best friend got married, we participated in the Renegade Craft Fair, had some crazy orders and oh, bought a HOUSE and moved. Right, it’s been a little crazy and I’m happy to report that we all survived (even with a little guy who is deep in toddler-ness…if you catch my drift). I can’t wait to show you some photos of our new house. It’s been a dream come true for us and it feels absolutely amazing to own our own four walls. But I’ll share those in a later post since it’ll be so photo heavy.

So let’s back up to September (as in two full months ago, I know…I’m hanging my head in shame) and talk about the Renegade Fair. If you’ve read my blog for a while (kudos to you for sticking around!), you know I’m a huge fan of the fair. Since Chicago is it’s home base, the fair always draws an amazing crowd. We debuted a new collection of artwork this year and it was a hit! Along with our pillows, jewelry and embroidered pieces.

Thank you so much to all the stopped by!! As usual, we had a great time. You all make what I do so fun and thrilling, so a big heart-felt thank you.

Speaking of shows, we have a few local (Chicago) holiday shows that we’re gearing up for. {Show of Hands on November 23rd and 24th and the Chicago Renegade Holiday Market on December 7th and 8th…don’t worry, I’ll update you with after pictures in April, m’kay? And, OH! We may or may not (hint: we will) be having another killer Black Friday/Cyber Monday like last year, so stay tuned…

I’ll be back later this week with photos of our new home, but here’s a little teaser (anyone else have the theme song from Golden Girls running through your head when you look at this mid-century ranch? Thank you for being a friend…….)

(This photo was taken during our inspection so it shows the previous owner’s decorations…some things have changed since we’ve moved in. ;)

At Home: My Sofa Pillows

At Home: My Sofa Pillows

So, I have a new flash for you all: I make pillows. (thank you Captain Obvious.)

But I make pillows for other people – for you all. I make them and ship them off to you. And when I’m lucky enough to sell them to you in person, I listen to your to how your living room or bedroom is set up and then advise you on what color would work best. But it occurred to me the other day that I’ve never shown you some of MY throw pillows. The ones that we use on a daily basis. (The ones that get thrown on the floor on a daily basis…thankyouverymuchOliver.)

I wish I told you that I’m my best customer and use all my own pillows, but I don’t. (Not because I don’t love them, are not proud of them or don’t fully stand behind them…which of course I do.) But because we have one (big) problem in our family…and comes in the form of a pudgy, furry cat named Bob Johnson. And Bob Johnson likes to chew things. And his favorite things to chew are pillows (shaking my fist in the air). So textured fabric is a big no-no here. Plain, cotton fabric is the only fabric that’ll fly.

So I decided enough was enough. (Plus I was itching to change things up around here.) So I made some new pillows and I’m kind of loving them. Okay, really loving them. I’ve always loved the look of studs (and used to sell pillows with studs on them). I decided to play around with studs and patterns and below are some of the beauts!

I wanted a little contrast and added a navy blue linen pillow with polished silver studs in a chevron design (I’m pretty sure my crush of chevron will not be going away anytime soon). And then I wanted some more color so I made a larger coral pillow with a greek key design. I love the coral so much because it adds the punch that my sofa needed (but I think I’ll make another to balance it out).

I love these so much that I’m thinking of adding a few of them to the shop. What do you think? What kind of pillows do you have on your sofa? Are you of the same thinking that there are never enough pillows? (Do you also have small child who thinks pillows belong on the floor? I’m sure I’m not alone…:)

In the Kitchen: Banana Bread

In the Kitchen: Banana Bread

White Nest Banana Bread

Is everyone moving a little slower than usual this morning? We had an amazing holiday weekend filled with lots of friends and crazy antics. But I am tired…let’s take one more day, m’kay? M’kay (yawn). Just kidding, let’s get baking instead! :)

Let’s just put it out there…I don’t like to cook. Nope, don’t like, not good at it, not interested at all (shaking my head and crossing my arms). But for the past few months, I really started getting into baking. I’m going to blame it on Pinterest and all the drool worthy food styling out there (excuse me, while I wipe my mouth). I can’t help it…my sweet tooth starts going crazy when I see all those melted chocolate chip cookies and smushy brownies.

White Nest Banana Bread

My mom was a great baker (although she wouldn’t believe you). She had a great arsenal of receipes that I’m going to cherish because they remind me of my childhood, but because they are also that good. I’ve been craving her Banana Bread receipe for a while now…she and I had a few conversations about it last year. It’s the best I’ve ever eaten. I finally got my hands on it recently and immediately made a few loaves. Mmmmm…a little bit of my childhood comes back to me when I have a piece. I thought I would share the recipe…

Banana Bread
2 cups bread flour
1-1/2 tsp. baking soda
2 eggs
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup margarine
1 Tbsp. milk
1/2 Tbsp. vinegar
1 tsp. lemon juice
3 large banana (better if ripe)
1 cup sugar
1 cup nuts (optional)

Sift the flour and baking soda into a large bowl and set to the side. Blend eggs, margarine, milk, vinegar, lemon juice, bananas, sugar and salt in a blender until smooth. Add the nuts and blend 15 seconds to chop the nuts. Pour over dry ingredients and stir lightly together. Bake in a greased bread pan (9.25″ x 5.25″) at 350 degrees for 45 mins. or until done (stick a tooth pick in…pick should be clean when it’s done).

White Nest Banana Bread

If you make it, I’d love to hear what you think! I like it best when it’s chilled and covered with butter. :)

Enjoy! Muah, Meg

Happy 4th!

Happy 4th!

Happy 4th of July!! I hope your morning is filled with hot waffles, fresh fruit and a little whipped cream. I know mine was (nom nom mmm nom nom nom). We’re off to the beach today (fingers crossed the sun comes out) and then fireworks this evening. It’ll be Oliver’s first fireworks! Here’s to hoping he likes them (unlike when I was little…let’s just say I would only look at fireworks if there was a giant set of earphones over my ears. True story.) :)

See you next week! Muah, Meg

Etsy Pop-up Shop at West Elm Recap

Etsy Pop-up Shop at West Elm Recap

Phew, last week kicked my butt. Okay, not literally but it was exhausting….hence, the oh-so-late recap on the Etsy Pop-up Show at West Elm. On a personal level, we have a lot of things going on so I had to put WN on the backburner for a bit. We’re having some housing issues that have been going on since February. So we’re deep in “finding a new living situation”. I won’t bore you with the details just yet because it’s still a “to be continued” situation, but once we come out on the other end, I’ll fill you in! In the meantime, if you could do a small prayer that we figure this out soon, I’d love you all very, very much.

ANYWAY, I digress. The Etsy Pop-up Shop at West Elm. It  was awesome. And being a former interior designer, it was such an honor. If you follow me on Instagram (whitenest), then you caught a glimpse of our display. It was amazing to see all my products in one of my favorite stores. Surrounded by such amazing furniture, accessories, etc. It was definitely a dream of mine come true.

Week in Review, Instagram-style.

Week in Review, Instagram-style.

It’s been quiet around here, I know. In light of my mom, I’ve been savoring every minute with my lil guy, Oliver. Many of you know I stay at home with him and work on White Nest during naps and in the evenings. The last month has been a tough one for me but I’m trying to Be Present and enjoy the days with Oliver. Even through his growing tantrums (patience, lots of patience), his personality is getting bigger and bigger. It’s truly amazing to watch this guy become a little human being. If you follow me on Instagram (whitenest), then you’ve seen these photos…but they are my favorites and makes my heart swell every time I look at them.

Instagram Images from Left to Right, Top to Bottom:

1. My two men. (Oliver’s reason for existing these days is to walk…OUTSIDE. If he could live outdoors, he would. Hands down, no questions. Just ask anyone who has seen him in the last few weeks…he trys to charm perfect strangers and then tries to get them to take him outside.)

2. The first time Oliver had spaghetti. I know, he’s 16-months and it was his first time…we’re just not big spaghetti people but we will be now because this kid. loved. it. Can you tell?

3. My recent flea market find! Love these old school chairs…they need a bit of work (or a complete overhaul) but he approves.

4. Another favorite…peek-a-boo! Love watching my dad and him play together.

5. Oliver is all boy and all energy. He rarely sits still, especially laying down. He was being silly yesterday in his crib…long enough for me to take a photo. Adorbs.

6. I’m telling you…..Outdoors + Oliver = Bliss.

7. It’s becoming a tradition to put silly hats on Oliver at Target. It’s hilarious. It makes me happy.

8. Just the two of us. (Who’s got the Will Smith stuck in their heads now?)

And I would be remiss if I didn’t share with you…today is a special day in our home. Five years ago today I married my best friend. (FIVE years…where has the time gone?) He is by far my biggest supporter and the love of my life. I love watching him be a dad to Oliver. He’s pretty amazing. Happy Anniversary Nathan! xoxo, meg

Introducing Our Summer Collection + Giveaway!

UPDATE: This giveaway is now closed! Thanks to all that participated!

Now, for the exciting news…the winner is: Amy M. who said: “Hey! LOVE these! They remind me of summery/cheery jack’o’lanterns. I know that’s weird, but they’re gorgeous. Would go excellent with my mustard colored honeycomb pillow…

Thanks again everyone!

White Nest Dip Dye Pillows

With Memorial Day being the “unofficial” start of summer, we can finally shout from the rooftops and say (or yell!) that our summer collection is finally here…I’m beyond thrilled to introduce our Dip Dyed Stripe Pillows!! Phew, I wish I could fully express how so so so excited we are…this collection has been in the works for months. (And actually longer…we tested out a version at last year’s Renegade Craft Fair in September…September, people. That’s a long time. :)

I’ve actually been playing with dying fabrics for the past few years and it’s definitely a labor of love. It requires many steps in order for the fabric to take the dye well. I’m in love with the end result of dying fabrics and how casually imperfect they are. They are made of 100% cotton fabric, are lined with a coordinating fabric on the back and each come with a down feather insert. They really scream summer to me…now, where is my cocktail on the beach? Seriously.

As always, you can find the pillows on my website or in my Etsy shop.

Because we are so excited about this collection (and because we’re almost at 600 likes on our Facebook page…whaaaaa?), we’re doing a GIVEAWAY!! One lucky winner gets the pillow of their choice…Square or Kidney, in any color from the collection!

The Nitty Gritty Deets

Have fun and good luck! (And enjoy some eye candy below ;)
